Professional Standards and Ethics
The term REALTOR has come to connote
competency, fairness and high integrity resulting from adherence to the
National Association of REALTORS
Code of Ethics
(pdf). The Code sets forth standards of conduct and
professional integrity that are the hallmark of the Illinois Association
of REALTORS and what sets apart REALTORS from other real estate
professionals.
The Code of Ethics imposes duties above and beyond those imposed by law
or regulation and applies only to real estate professionals who choose
to become REALTORS. Members of the National
Association of REALTORS and
IAR must successfully complete a
course in ethics, an
element of NAR's
Code of Ethics. The policy
requires that REALTORS take ethics training within given
four-year cycles and continue to update their education in
successive four-year periods thereafter.
If a REALTOR is found in violation of the Code they
are subject to discipline. Many difficulties result in
miscommunication and can be resolved through speaking directly with the
REALTOR or with a principal broker (managing broker/owner) in the firm. If you are still not satisfied, you may want to
contact the
local association of REALTORS in your area to have an informal dispute
process scheduled to resolve the issue or you may want to consider
filing an ethics complaint.
If you believe the individual with whom
you are working has violated the License Law, contact the Illinois
Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) enforcement
personnel at 312/793.8704 to file a written complaint or download the
IDFPR
Consumer Services Inquiry Form.
To determine if someone has a current real estate license
in Illinois, you should visit the
IDFPR Web site or contact them at
217/785-9300.
