Professional Standards and Ethics

A REALTOR®'s Pledge of Performance and Service

The term REALTOR® has come to connote competency, fairness and high integrity resulting from adherence to the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics. The Code sets forth standards of conduct and professional integrity that are the hallmark of the Illinois Association of REALTORSŪ and what sets apart REALTORS® from other real estate professionals.

Ethics Enforcement

The Code of Ethics imposes duties above and beyond those imposed by law or regulation and applies only to real estate professionals who are REALTORS®. Members of the National Association of REALTORS® must successfully complete ethics training within given four-year cycles. If a REALTOR® is found in violation of the Code they are subject to discipline.

To file an ethics complaint:

Many difficulties result in miscommunication and can be resolved through speaking directly with the REALTORŪ or with a principal broker (managing broker/owner) in the firm. If you are still not satisfied, you may want to contact the local association of REALTORSŪ in your area to have an informal dispute process scheduled to resolve the issue or you may want to consider filing an ethics complaint.

Know that now every real estate licensee is a REALTORŪ.

Illinois real estate licensees are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), Bureau of Real Estate Professions. If you believe the individual with whom you are working with has violated the License Law, contact IDFPR enforcement personnel at 312/793.8704 to file a written complaint or download the IDFPR Consumer Services Inquiry Form.

To determine if someone has a current real estate license in Illinois, use the IDFPR online license look-up or call 217/785-0800.
